The last few months have been like a game of Pong, with complaints from some Wii owners, alleged to be the nerdier end of the spectrum, over the console’s pitiful amount of internal storage. It’s an issue for anyone that buys lots of games from the Virtual Console and WiiWare download services and plays games non-stop in their free time. Games can’t be backed up to an SD card or to an external USB hard drive, though they can be redownloaded if you need to clear space for another game, though.
There’s little reason for concern though, even with Nintendo’s admission that they’re looking into the issue. It has already arrived at something like a solution: release fluff on the Virtual Console that will have even casual gamers reaching for the off switch. I’m talking about games like City Connection, an old NES platformer that debuted on the Virtual Console this week. This lack of quality (and classic status) is almost a theme when it comes to this year’s releases.
The NES had far better games, though the Super Mario Bros. games are already available, and I suspect that Rare are in no hurry to give added value to a rival of Microsoft. Classics such as Solar Jetman are unlikely to get an outing, but there’s still plenty in the hundreds-long list of NES titles that are more worthy than City Connection of 500 points.
Alternatively, how about adding Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles to the Virtual Console. They may look hideous compared to Game Boy Advance and DS titles, but they’re roughly on par with NES and Master System games. Epics such as the sole Super Nintendo Zelda game, A Link to the Past have been preserved for the kids and retro lovers, while the charming Link’s Awakening DX slums it in limbo.
It’s not as epic as more recent home console iterations, but it retains enough of the series’ atmosphere to entertain. Please, Nintendo, wake this beautiful game up and make a few quid from it.
I urge you to watch the video for A Link to the Past. It’s not at all like the others. Seriously.

My in-laws are visiting just now and they’ve brought their Wii with them; we’ve made our Miis, and plan to indulge in a little Wii Sports this evening!
